This race offers multiple challenges: the now well-established one with Alberto\u2019s Italian \u201cantagonist\u201d Ambrogio Beccaria; the all-European one against the great French navigators; and the personal one, which means making the Class40 <em>IBSA <\/em>run as fast as possible, no matter what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"container-lazyload preview-lazyload container-youtube js-lazyload--not-loaded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u7Y2Fvzi_4g\" class=\"lazy-load-youtube preview-lazyload preview-youtube\" data-video-title=\"D\u00e9fi Atlantique: Departure\" title=\"Play video &quot;D\u00e9fi Atlantique: Departure&quot;\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/u7Y2Fvzi_4g<\/a><noscript>Video can&#8217;t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u7Y2Fvzi_4g\" title=\"D\u00e9fi Atlantique: Departure\">D\u00e9fi Atlantique: Departure (https:\/\/youtu.be\/u7Y2Fvzi_4g)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as the <em>return transat<\/em> \u2013 i.e. <strong>the return race to bring back to Europe many of the Class40s <\/strong>that participated in the <em>Route du Rhum<\/em> \u2013 the <em>D\u00e9fi Atlantique<\/em> is not a simple transfer regatta. Indeed, the 13 Class40s will have to cover 3,500 miles of navigation in two stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first \u2013 2,200 miles long, which <strong>began on&nbsp; April 1 from Pointe-\u00e0 Pitre<\/strong>, in Guadeloupe \u2013 started with medium-light winds, and immediately saw the Class40 <em>IBSA <\/em>in the leading group, consisting of <strong>Alberto Bona<\/strong> \u2013 this time on board with the Spaniard <strong>Pablo Santurde del Arco<\/strong> and the Italian <strong>Pietro Luciani<\/strong> \u2013 Ambrogio Beccaria and the French Ian Lipinski. Despite the 2,000 miles still to be covered to finish the first stage, the three crews are very focused and determined to closely mark each other from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>The first night went well<\/em>\u201d,\u2013 said Alberto, \u201c<em>a few squalls brought the wind up to 35 knots, but we\u2019re sailing at an average of 25. The crew is on the same wavelength and work well together; in short, we\u2019ve had a promising start.
