Normandy Channel Race 2024: two weeks to go
Here we go again! Alberto Bona is ready to go back to the water for the Normandy Channel Race: after a short but well-deserved rest following the two oceanic crossings (the Transat CIC in May and the Québec Saint-Malo in July), the skipper of the Class40 IBSA is getting ready for the third challenge of the season, which will start on September 15. Bona will crew up with Italian ocean sailor Alberto Riva.
Starting and finishing in Caen (Normandy, France), the Normandy Channel Race features 1,000 nautical miles along the South-West coast of England, crossing the English Channel and the Celtic Sea. Iconic and spectacular will be the passage before of the Fastnet, the famous Irish lighthouse that the fleet must circumnavigate and which by Bona had already encountered last season, during the Rolex Fastnet Race and the Normandy Channel Race 2023.
Unlike the last edition, which took place in June, this year the regatta will be held in autumn, an event that occurs every four years. The event is indeed scheduled for Sunday, September 15, when the fleet will line up for the start off the port of Ouistreham, approximately 15 kilometers from Caen.
Now in its 15th edition, the Normandy Channel Race is one of the most anticipated events of the Class40 calendar. It’s a particularly demanding competition, one that requires technical skills and a deep knowledge of currents and tides.
Considered one of the most difficult regattas in the sailing scene, the Normandy Channel Race is in fact known for the challenges imposed by the variable weather conditions of the Celtic Sea and by the powerful tides, quite familiar situations for Alberto.
For sure the experience gained during the Normandy 2023 will allow our skipper to face the 2024 edition with even more determination and a refined strategy.
The third regatta of the year is getting near: Alberto Bona is preparing to tackle the Normandy Channel Race, starting from Caen (Normandy, France) on September 15. The Class40 IBSA had already participated in this historic event last year; Alberto will therefore once again be sailing along the challenging waters of the English Channel and the Celtic Sea, together with co-skipper Alberto Riva. The countdown begins!
