Alberto Bona’s preparation for the 2024 Season: a mix of running, wingfoil and meditation

21 February 2024

Two months before the first regatta of 2024 – the Transat CIC, which will start on April 28 – and with the Class40 IBSA in the shipyard for the necessary refitting, after the 15,000 nautical miles sailed last year, Bona is intensely dedicating himself to his physical and mental preparation, in order to best face the forthcoming season.

Perfected during the first two years of the project Sailing into the Future. Together, the programme involves a complete daily workout, in and out of the water. Alberto’s day starts with a morning run of several kilometres, followed by a targeted stretching session to prepare the body for the long and demanding days of solo racing that await him.

The most exciting and fun part of his training is the session of wingfoil, a water sport on a finned surfboard equipped with a sail inspired by surfing, SUP, windsurfing and kiteboarding. At this time of year, the water temperature in Trinité-sur-Mer is around 10°C – and wing foiling certainly won’t allow anyone to stay dry! – but this type of training is very important for Alberto, as it allows him to stay in contact with the water and sail in the wind, despite the break due to the maintenance of his Class40.

In addition to his physical training, Bona dedicates time every day to his breathing and meditation exercises:these moments of calm and concentration allow him to regenerate and recover his energy, and also to find a mental balance which will be critical to face his future challenges.
